Previously known as Hockerells Street / Hockrell Street. Also Lynches Street. Said to take its modern name from the manorial barn (demolished c1860) which once stood in the grounds of The Grove in Lady Street.
Stocko (Metal Works) Ltd, which occupied the old horsehair factory buildings, had roll-fed multi-stage presses fabricating large quantities of small metal parts for the electronic and paper trade (the latter being parts for filing systems, clips etc.) The factory closed in the late 20th century and was converted to living accommodation.
